SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction to Scholarly Teaching Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Register here | Facilitator: Breana Bayraktar\n\n\n\n\nEffective teaching often involves trying new approaches—but how do we know what actually improves student learning? Scholarly Teaching Inquiry/Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) offers a structured way to answer that question by treating the classroom as a site for systematic\, evidence-based investigation. In this session\, you will explore core principles of inquiry into teaching and learning\, reflect on your own instructional practices\, and identify a meaningful question about student learning in your course. You will begin designing a focused\, manageable inquiry project and consider practical methods for collecting and interpreting evidence\, with the goal of generating insights that can inform your teaching and contribute to broader conversations about learning. Attendees will be eligible for a drawing to win a copy of Nancy Chick’s Book\, SoTL in Action. Please reach out to Breana Bayraktar (bbayrakt@gmu.edu) with any questions.\n\n*Adding to your calendar will not register you for the event; please register using the link above.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction to Alternative Grading
DESCRIPTION:Register here | Facilitator: Breana Bayraktar\n\n\n\n\nThis introductory workshop provides a clear overview of alternative grading and its most common approaches\, including specifications grading\, mastery-based grading\, and labor-based models. Participants will explore the core principles that distinguish these approaches from traditional grading and consider how they impact student learning\, motivation\, and equity. The session is designed as a foundation for instructors who are new to alternative grading or who want a structured entry point before engaging in more in-depth design work. By the end\, participants will understand key models\, common challenges\, and how to begin preparing for implementing alternative grading in their own courses. Open to all instructors and graduate students. \n\n*Adding to your calendar will not register you for the event; please register using the link above.

SUMMARY:Workshop: (Re)Designing Syllabi for Inclusive Classrooms that Support Learners & Instructors
DESCRIPTION:Register here | Facilitator: Rachel Yoho\nAre you ready to align your courses with university commitments to inclusive teaching? Or are you developing a new course or submitting an existing one for the new university-wide tags (like Mason Core)? In this workshop\, we will work to advance our understanding of inclusive course design and how to improve syllabi to be more inclusive for everyone in the space (including instructors!). During the session\, we will have specific discussion time to focus on connecting these ideas with your course and your discipline. At the end of the workshop\, participants will leave with a greater understanding of the potential considerations for designing and redesigning inclusive course syllabi and aligning with broader institutional initiatives and expectations. \nPlease reach out to Dr. Rachel Yoho (ryoho@gmu.edu) with any questions. \n*Adding to your calendar will not register you for the event; please register using the link above.
